Very moving book and highly recommended reading for people in the 40s and younger who may not have been exposed to the Nazi movement. Keneally is an excellent author who writes untainted by religion. My main criticism is that by being fiction, it could have allowed Keneally to explore the motives and thinkings of the people involved. In the midst of all the usual horrors of total war one would think it couldn't get any worse.
But in this account we find genocide, murder, sadism etc on a scale which is beyond comprehension. The sheer enormity of these crimes is hard for anyone to comprehend. To think very, very few who were actually living within the sphere of the Nazi regime did anything to help save at least some of these people is beyond belief, yet Oskar managed it.
Oskar Schindler accomplished this and much, much more and deserves a very special place in history. To my relief the Israeli people honoured him and some helped him in his later years.
To have been spat on and reviled, in public, by the German populace at the end of hostilities was truly disgusting. Thomas Keneally has penned the ultimate record of the man, Oskar Schindler, with complete candour. He describes Oskar for what he was, warts and all. A man with incredible drive, generosity, courage and love. A man who might have made a fortune but who beggared himself for the sake of others.
This book is an accurate, responsible, well researched account and is very readable giving remarkable insight into a period of history most would rather forget, but shouldn't, ever. I should add the author has also given an in depth account of a lot of the people he helped along with a truly hair raising, spine chilling insight into the evil that was the SS, particularly Amon Goeth. This book, I believe, inspired the movie, Schindlers List.
One person found this helpful. An important reminder of how easily a group of people can be influenced to commit evil against an innocent race of people. A difficult but compelling book.
I enjoyed reading this book, and the author writes well, with authority and feeling, but without over-sentimentality. I have read other books by this author and enjoyed most. He has many other creative interests as well. For many years he played tenor saxophone in a Bay Area jazz and rhythm and blues ensemble. Kunden kauften auch Artikel von Ashlee Vance.
